John’s expertise is in messaging, strategy and crisis communication on behalf of clients in the healthcare, industrial, energy and utilities fields.
He is a current board member and past Chairman of the Board of the Tennessee Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Goodwill Industries of Middle Tennessee, and the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame. John also serves on the Board of Trustees of Cumberland University, is a past trustee of Franklin Road Academy, and past Chairman of the Nashville Downtown Partnership.
John was presented the Keystone Award of the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame for his leadership in establishing the group’s first physical Hall of Fame inside downtown Nashville’s Music City Center. He also holds the Career Achievement Award presented by the International Association of Business Communicators (IABC). During his military service, John was awarded the Army Commendation Medal and the Bronze Star Medal.
While still a student at the University of Tennessee, John became a full-time writer for the Associated Press Knoxville bureau, working at night and attending classes during the day. After U.S. Army service in Vietnam as a public information officer, he returned to the AP Nashville bureau. He had six years of public relations agency experience and four years as head of public relations for the Tennessee Valley Authority before co-founding the agency that became DVL.
